Built in 1778 by the architect Piermarini to replace the royal Ducal T. that had been burned to the ground two years previously, the theater was named after Regina Della Scala, wife of the Duke Bamabo Visconti of Milan, who had founded the same site in the 14th century. It opened on August 3, 1778 with Salieri's Europa Risconsciuta. Every great Italian composer has written for La Scala – Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, and Puccini – and it has been the scene of the first performances of La Gazza Ladra, Lucrezia Borgia, Norma, Othello, Fallstaff, Madame Butterfly, and Turandot, as well as many more works.

Despite hostile bombings in World War I, La Scala has stood the physical elements of 'Mother Nature' and continues to set the standard of performance that few other theaters can equal.
