The Greater Birmingham Humane Society, Founded in 1883 by Dr. John HerbertPhilips (Philip's High School) is the first and oldest non-profitorganization in Birmingham and one of the first 12 Humane Societies in theUSA. Dr. Philips founded the Society as a means to teach studentsresponsibility, character, and respect through the use of animals. Throughthe years the Greater Birmingham Humane Society has developed in to acomprehensive animal shelter with programs that include Humane Education,Behavior Counseling, Spay/Neuter Programs, an on site Veterinarian andoperational clinic and Animal Cruelty Prevention. We receive no governmentor United Way Funding. We depend on the generosity of our community to keepprograms and services available for the community 7 days a week.
Our new shelter, which will be on Snow Drive in Homewood, will include stateof the art kennels along with an interactive educational center, and a24-hour emergency animal clinic opened for the public. Our goal for thisnew shelter is to make it the "McWayne Center" for animal welfare andeducation. The new shelter will be centered around both the welfare of theanimals and the benefit of the Greater Birmingham area. The total cost ofthis project is $6 million dollars.
Mission: The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is dedicated to promotingthe respect of life through education and the prevention of cruelty toanimals and people.

Monday thru Saturday 10 AM- 5 PM Sunday 10 AM- 5 PM
Adoptions:
For a puppy or kitten: $130.00, which includes a $65.00 refundable petdeposit once the animal is spayed or neutered.Animals 6 months and older are spayed and neutered in the clinic prior totheir adoption. Their adoption fee is a $70.00 tax-deductible donation.
